But what does that mean? What certifications does a roofer need in order to be able to work on your home? Here is a quick guide to help you understand the different types of certification a roofer may have.   ## Does A Roofer Need To Be Certified? The unfortunate truth here is - no, a roofer is not required to be certified in many states, including Georgia. This means that some roofing companies offering to [repair](https://colonyroofers.com/residential-roofing/roofing-repair/) or [replace](https://colonyroofers.com/residential-roofing/roof-replacement/) your roof don't have licenses, and may even be out to make a quick buck instead of doing the job properly and up to code. The good news is, there are a lot of reputable companies out there who carry certifications even though many states don't require them to do so. It's always a good idea to ask your roofing company to provide a list of their certifications, which they should be able to give you no problem.   ## What Does Certification Mean For Roofers? The certification process for roofers exists to ensure that the people hired have the skills and knowledge required to deliver a quality job in an efficient manner. Certification proves they are trained properly and have the necessary abilities to measure, cut, install, and repair roofs. Additionally, roofers who hold a certification indicate that they understand the local [roofing regulations](https://colonyroofers.com/learningcenter/does-roof-replacement-require-a-permit) and standards of practice that must be respected in their area of work. Moreover, certified roofers often demonstrate a commitment to high-quality craftsmanship and ethical conduct, as well as possess up-to-date safety training.   ## Types Of Certifications For Roofers #### NRCA Certification [NRCA](https://www.nrca.net/) stands for National Roofing Contractors Association. NRCA certification means that a roofer is trained and knowledgeable about different roofing systems, styles, materials, and installation techniques. These certifications are required to be renewed every three years, so if your roofer is NRCA certified you can be sure that they are up to date on the latest information and safety techniques. Types of NRCA Certifications include: - NRCA ProCertified Architectural Metal Flashings and Accessories Installer - NRCA ProCertified Asphalt Shingles Installer - NRCA ProCertified Clay and Concrete Tile Systems Installer - NRCA ProCertified EPDM Systems Installer - NRCA ProCertified Metal Panel Roof Systems Installer - NRCA ProCertified Metal Shingle Systems Installer - NRCA ProCertified Thermoplastic Systems Installer (e.g., TPO, PVC) - NRCA ProCertified Roofing Foreman #### CERTA The CERTA certification is designed for contractors that use torches. It trains on the safe use of roofing torches used to apply polymer-modified bitumen roofing products. CERTA training also trains in proper roof system configuration design and application results in fire-safe installation.   #### OSHA-10 The [OSHA-10](https://www.osha.com/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=paidsearch&utm_campaign=12668680503&utm_content=123321570234&utm_term=&gclid=Cj0KCQiA5NSdBhDfARIsALzs2ECzaR674qS8zU19FG80hJB9rVUIyK0tFlKRm6fjQn0vg6t80eCSRvYaAmFfEALw_wcB) certification is a 10 hour safety course that teaches general safety information, specifically tailored to the construction industry. Having this certification lets you know that your roofer cares not only about you and your home, but about keeping themselves and their workers safe as well.   #### NFPA NFPA stands for National Fire Protection Association. This certification is offered to workers in several fields, but for roofers it's available to those who specialize in fire protection systems on roofs.   ## Ask Your Roofer For A List Of Their Certifications When researching different roofing companies, make sure that they provide you with a comprehensive list of certifications held by their employees. If you ask a roofer for a list of their certifications, they should have no trouble providing it for you. Be wary of any company that can't or wont provide you with such a list. This will provide peace of mind knowing that you are entrusting the project to qualified professionals who understand all the safety protocols associated with such a job. Certified roofers can leverage their knowledge of best practices and techniques to provide lasting results at an unbeatable standard so that your roof can serve its ideal function for years to come.   ## In Search Of A Certified Roofer?
