Roof Warranties Explained

As a homeowner, when looking into a roof repair or roof replacement, you may be asking yourself, what is the warranty on a roof repair? When it comes to roofing warranties, you are essentially looking at three main types, and there are some important things to understand about each one. Let's take a closer look.

The 3 Types of Roofing Warranties

As far as roofing warranties go, your three main types are going to be as follows

  • Standard Manufacturer's Warranty
  • Workmanship Warranty
  • Extended Manufacturer's Warranty

Below, we will take a look at each one, and help you to understand what they are, what they cover, and why they're important.

Standard Manufacturer's Warranty

A Standard Manufacturer's Warranty is going to be your most universal warranty that cover's your roof and the products used to install it. Most roofing shingles come with the industry standard of a limited lifetime warranty. But what does "lifetime warranty" mean anyway?Generally speaking, a lifetime warranty will cover you as long as you own your home. The "limited" portion of this will vary depending on manufacturer, and this determines the degree of coverage you receive.

Many manufacturer warranties don’t cover much beyond the cost of defective shingles. In many instances, you are even responsible for the cost of labor to remove and dispose of the failed shingles and install the replacements. During the initial warranty period, you will get replacement shingles at no cost, and you may be eligible to recoup the cost of the labor to install the new shingles, but you’re still responsible for the cost of removing them. After the first few years, your limited lifetime warranty will go into a prorated period, where you will receive just a portion of the cost or a lesser amount of new shingles. It’s also a standard of manufacturer warranties that they only cover factory defects. If your shingles fail because of installation mistakes, or any other workmanship related issues.

Workmanship Warranty

A reputable roofing contractor will provide you with a workmanship warranty after any kind of roof repair or replacement. The length of these warranties will vary depending on the contractor, but a good workmanship warranty will cover you in the event of any material failure that occurs because of worker errors or improper installation regardless of what your coverage term is.

These types of warranties are great, because they will typically cover the cost of labor and materials required to make the repairs. This alone is a great reason why you should always consider hiring a reputable roofer to make your repairs before tackling it yourself.

Although these warranties cover a lot, they typically do not provide coverage for issues unrelated to workmanship or installation, such as weather damage due to storms, or leaks triggered by falling tree limbs or wind driven debris.

Extended Manufacturer's Warranty

The most comprehensive coverage option for roofing warranties is going to be the optional extended warranty coverage offered by leading manufacturers on new roofing systems installed by authorized contractors. Most of these warranties are available for an additional cost and require you have a complete roofing system installed.

Trusted manufacturers offering the most comprehensive warranties will provide a range of benefits like coverage for all components, continuous coverage for defective materials, and workmanship coverage against any errors made in installation.
